BI-FI cooking table

BI-FI is a backcountry cooking system to help new and old lovers of mother nature experience it fully, while respecting the environment. Instead of buying a bunch of different cooking gear for the different trips, you can now buy one system that preps, grills and boils all of your food in one location. This allows the user to leave as minimal a trace as possible and get the best out of their outdoor experience.

Research

Problem statement :

buying the right cooking tools for a backcountry trip is overwhelming for the new and current outdoor adventurer.

Field Testing

In order to figure out the right gear and gather insights, I tested these tools, such as titanium pans, lightweight burners, cleaning tools etc.

I took two trips to gather first hand insight into this category of product. Also, I love camping so why would I not…

1st trip: Snow Camping

Car camping is easy because you can bring gear but that leaves a bigger trace. Also, these snow tables were made by previous campers and were helpful when organizing our cooking products.

2nd trip: Overnight Backpacking

It is difficult to decide what to bring when backpacking. This causes your cooking station to become full of stuff you need or wish you had...

The Opportunity:

help new and current day backcountry adventurers organize their cooking tools for cooking in the outdoors.

DSC00203.jpg

the most important insight was that we don’t need another pot and pan kit, but a way to simplify the backcountry cooking experience.

The Solution:

a backcountry cooking system that provides the basic tools to prepare, cook and eat in the outdoors.

Design

Design Opportunities:

1. Cooking surface: how might we organize the cooking space?

2. Raised flame: how might we keep the cooking flame from burning more than food?

3. Portability: how might we limit the amount of weight and space we need?

4. Storage: how might we store other tools in the cooking space?

5. Sustainability: how might we produce the space for repair and less material?

The Main Product:

I focused on the main product of the system, which would be a cooking surface/table. I chose to focus on this product because of the innovation it would bring to the market and it is a strong starting foundation for a cooking system.

Form inspiration

I was inspired by the Prouve compas desk and how the legs connect and almost act as if they fold together...

Engineered Sustainability

The CMF plays a huge role in the functionality of any camping product and this table follows suit.

Hexagonal Pattern

the pattern on the back legs, as well as the reset of the body, provides structural support and reduces weight at the same time.

Anodized Aluminum

Aluminum is light and easily reused and recycled. When anodized, it not only helps prevent rust, but reduces thermal conductivity so the surfaces don’t get too hot.
