KBA NotaSys currency of 2050

KBA NotaSys produces 80% of the worlds banknotes and came to Artcenter to know what the next 15-20 years will look like. The questions that I asked myself are as follows and lead to my final exploration of the topic:

what will the future of currency be within the next 15-20 years? is there an inevitable move toward the digital or is the analog banknote the cornerstone of our economic system?

(fall 2019, 14 weeks, sponsored project)

A banknote that becomes beautiful over time and use, to represent the people that circulate the bill.

digital vs analog

from the beginning in this project, I wanted to focus on the juxtaposition of these two topics, due to the digital age of currency. After my research and exploration, the path I went down was different from what I expected.

What the people said

the common person uses cash only when they have it, and it tends to be spend on personal items, cash only purchases (local business) and on people.

I also found that the people love the anonymity of cash. this told me that cash is really about the people and their needs. after all, without the people, there would be no economy

Exploration

I choose to focus on these three areas of exploration, due to the insights from interviews/surveys.

user touchpoints

I created prototypes to validate my touchpoint and form ideas.

key design insights

from these explorations in 2D and 3D, I was able to create criteria for my final design.

  1. the physical design must organize itself better, for easier access and smaller footprint, while keeping its rectangular shape.

  2. the banknote must have physical value, not just in idea but in material. this value gives power to the people.

  3. the material should become beautiful overtime, to represent the people that use the banknote.

tactility, value and structure.

a banknote design for the people and the story they tell through the use. These key features such as the tactile holes to show physical denomination to those who can’t see and a tri-fold design for easier storage show the personal use and care in this banknote.
