Munchkin utensils

this project was done at my internship at Munchkin during the summer of 2019. I was tasked with designing a 12 month old utensil set for toddlers that also changed color due to cold and or hot temperature.

This project is currently on the market today and you can buy online or in store.

(summer 2019, internship project, 8 weeks)

Research

What does the toddler need?

I first focused on references such as the type of food and previous Munchkin spoons to start designing.

ME discussions

based on these tests, I talked with our ME team in Hong Kong to figure out if we could find a plastic that could work with the right temperatures.

Munchkin reference

I looked at these popular spoons for proportion and spoon head design reference.

CAD process, where I used a Ultimaker FDM printer to test my concepts.

Final concepts

the concepts ranged form a more classic organic form, to a more geometric shape. we choose to explore these options because we felt that the more geometric forms could help the toddler grip and scoop.

Solidworks advanced surfacing was used to create the models.

Post-meeting

After presenting my concepts to the whole Munchkin team, they agreed that we should go with a combination of concept 1 and 2.

final product

I just wanted to thank Munchkin and the whole team, as this experience gave me great value as a designer but also taught me that is all about the team when it comes to creating a product, no matter the scale.
